NTRP GUIDE
What is NTRP? A Complete Guide to Tennis Skill Ratings
Understanding your tennis level helps you find the right program and get the most out of every lesson.
What is NTRP?
The National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) is a standardized system developed by the USTA (United States Tennis Association) for classifying tennis players by skill level. It uses a numerical scale from 1.0 (complete beginner) to 7.0 (touring professional).
NTRP ratings are used worldwide by clubs, coaches, and leagues to group players of similar ability. This ensures you get matched with the right courses, practice partners, and competitive opportunities.
At DTT Tennis Club, we use NTRP as a reference alongside our Smart Course Matching Quiz to help you find the perfect program for your current level and goals.
NTRP Level Breakdown

5.0+ — Elite player
You have exceptional power, consistency, and tactical ability. You can hit winners from various positions and execute advanced strategies under pressure.
How to Find Your NTRP Level
Be honest about your current play
Rate yourself based on how you play right now, not how you played years ago or on your best day.
Consider your consistency
NTRP is about what you can do reliably, not occasionally. If you can hit a great forehand once in a while but miss most, rate based on the norm.
Play a few sets
The best way to gauge your level is to play matches against players of known ratings and see how you compare.
Ask a coach
A qualified coach can assess your level quickly. At DTT, we evaluate every new student to ensure they are placed in the right program.
